When you decide to donate a car to charity, there are many benefits for yourself as well as the receiver. When a person gives a car to a certain charity, they should be feel great that this act of kindness will go toward their organization of choice, and this in itself can be a very worthwhile feeling.

Many organizations are in need for transportation for the work they do. It can be used for certain missionary work, to buy different supplies when needed or for many other purposes, so if someone decided to dontate a car to charity, this would really help them out big time.

When you decide to donate, you will find that it is less of a hassle than to actually sell your vehicle. Your car can be donated “as-is”, you don’t have to place an ad in the newspaper, you don’t have to find a seller, and you don’t have go through the back and forth negotiations. If you don’t have much time on your hands, the whole process of having to sell your car can take up a great deal of time. At least you don’t have to deal with questionable buyers when you donate.

Giving support to an up-and-coming organization could be the thing they need to start doing their work efficiently within the community – you may even have one local charity that you want to help out, so donating your car could be a great way to do this.

When you donate a car to charity, this could also allow you to receive a tax rebate equal to the estimated value of the car you choose to donate. Make sure to keep detailed records of this transaction for verification purposes. At least when you walk away from this transaction, you will know that you definitely will at least get a receipt for the fair market value minus any donation expenses.

During these tough economic times, many people don’t want to have to worry about maintaining a car; purchasing gas, insurance, maintenance, and other costly services that can add up at the most inopportune times.

When you donate car to charity, you will be serving humanity in a special way. You could be helping children with special needs or provide shelter for the homeless; sometimes these vehicles are auctioned off and sold and in turn the funds are given to that charities work or mission.

I’ve only listed a few key benefits that you, or the charity can receive when you donate a car to charity, but there are so much more. Just know when you decide to donate your vehicle that you are helping your community out in a big way. This sure can be a great feeling, so if you think that donating your car to charity is something that you may wish to do, then it will certainly benefit you to make further enquiries and maybe go this way.

There are several factors to be aware of when you consider used car donations.
The very first thing that you need to be aware of is that the IRS will only allow the fair market value as your tax write off. These tax laws were changed because quite a few people were taking advantage of the huge write-off they received. It only takes a few bad apples to spoil the bunch.

Many times when a car is donated, the car is usually not what is used. Most of the time the organization will sell the car and place the proceeds toward the actual charity. What this means for you is that you will only receive a write off for what the car sold for, not for what the car is worth. For example, if you car is worth $10,000 and it only sold for $2,000, you can only write off $2,000.

When donating your car, be careful in choosing the charity. Of course there is great money potential involving used car donations, so charities will make this process as easy as possible. All you need is to provide a few details and with the click of a button, you are waiting for a tow truck to pick up your vehicle. There are 1000s of charities that do very well in touching your emotions, especially if you have had a love one to die and you have found a charity that helps to prevent that specific disease or illness they may have had.

With all of this said, there are many charities that are not legally registered as a non profit organization. Whenever there is a lucrative process, there will be a scam artist lurking in the shadows to prey on unsuspecting victims. Do your due diligence in getting the actual letter showing that they are a charitable organization. You will be sorry if you do not do this.

There are also many 3rd party companies that try to take all the hassle and stress away from you and will handle everything from picking up the vehicle, disbursing the funds, and also the car sale. You can come into an issue when the 3rd party starts loading up fees for their services. Before even dealing with a 3rd party company, find out in the beginning what you will have to pay them after the donation is complete.

Lastly, don’t count on the organization or the receiver to be accountable for any errors made with the fair market value of the car. You are responsible for this and will have to pay a penalty if the numbers are way off.

Regardless of how you choose to handle your used car donations, just be thankful that you have done something that will help out someone in the end.

If you never did this before, you may think that donating your car is a simple task. “I’m just giving it away for free and it’s for a good cause; what else could I be required to do?” Luckily, I have already been through the process to donate my car and I will be more than happy to share a few tips with you.

Finding out Your Car’s Worth

Your first step is to get a snapshot of your car’s value. Determining this will allow you to see the monetary benefit of donating versus selling your car.

You can go to KBB.com (Kelly’s Blue book) and it will provide you with your car’s blue book value for its present condition. All you have to do is fill out some preliminary questions about your vehicle.

What if My Car Doesn’t Run?

Depending on the place you want to donate your car, this may not matter. Most charities or organizations that accept donated cars do not mind the car not running. However, if the towing costs are more than what the car is worth-these companies may reconsider. If you have a vehicle that doesn’t run, your best bet is to do some research with companies in your local area or online and check out their guidelines for receiving donations.

Items Needed Before the Transaction

Most companies will want you to have the keys and the title information available, however, if you do not have these items, there are many companies who will make other arrangements allowing you to still make the donation.

What is Next?

Once I found out about my car’s worth and gathered information pertaining to it, the process to donate my car was very simple. Most companies will pick up vehicles in all 50 states. At this point you can just sit back and relax. A towing company will stop by to pick up your vehicle and everything is done after that! All you need to do now is write this transaction off on your taxes. The organization you donated your car to should provide you a receipt showing proof of your donation.

Car Donations to Charity as a Tax Write Off

Many people are aware that when they make car donations to charity, that you can get a wonderful tax deduction; however, there are few things you may want to consider before saying your final farewell.

Ask for the organization’s Letter of Determination. This letter verifies the organizations tax-exempt status; in other words, is the company a charitable organization?

What if the company doesn’t have its Letter of Determination? Find out if they have any Letter’s of Organization with the appropriate clauses in it. Basically, the process of receiving a Letter of Determination can take up to a year. I would definitely get advice from your attorney and take a look at the verbiage in the articles.

Right after your donation, make sure to get a receipt that is well documented. The following should be included: Donor’s name, description of item being donated, a statement showing if there were any services or goods in exchange for donation, an estimate of the value of services or goods being donated.

Keep an accurate account of what has been documented for the IRS. Make sure you have documentation verifying the estimated value of the vehicle and keep a detailed record of this.

One thing to consider when making car donations to charity is if your used car is worth $500 or more, you will need to fill out the newest revision of the tax deduction form. You will need to attach this to your tax return. Make sure to also have an acknowledgment written by the charity.

You may want to find out if the organization is planning to sell your vehicle as they must give you the sales price within 30 days of the donation; they must also supply you with the certification showing the vehicle was purchased and sold by parties that are not related to each other.

Even if the car is not sold, they still must provide you with a certification within 30 days showing what their intentions are in utilizing the vehicle (repair or upgrade, etc) and their intentions of not selling or transferring the vehicle.

Get an appraisal completed for your car if it worth over $5,000

For vehicles under $5,000, make sure to get an estimated value from the Kelly Blue Book based on your car’s information.

These are just a few tips when you decide to make car donations to charity. Always seek professional advice if you have a question about this; seeking professional advice about something that you are unsure of can save you fines and penalties from the IRS down the road.

It is wonderful when car donation charities make it simple to donate to the charity of your choice. Many organizations such as the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, and the Kidney foundation, to name a few, are very appreciative of these vehicular contributions. When you know exactly where your money is going, you have more of a peace of mind.

Many donations go towards saving lives as well as improving the quality of life. In the year 2000, there were over 200,000 people in the United States that donated their car and deducted this on their tax returns. Since the tax law in revision in 2004 stating that donors are only to receive the fair market value of their vehicle and not what the car is worth, may have changed these numbers for today.

Avoid 3rd party organization who are only looking to make a profit out of this non-profit type process. These companies usually try to take the load off of you by handling everything involving the donated vehicle.

It is horrible to see that these 3rd party companies have been known to take from 50% and up to 90% of the profit and sometimes more than that! Not trying to sound opinionated as it is my job to give you all the facts without bias–but this sounds like theft. You could actually call this a deliberate scam through car donation charities. Just be careful.

There are many legitimate car donation programs out there that will assist you in the donation process. They are Make A Wish Foundation, Car Donation Program, Target Car Donation Program, and many many more. It would be good to check with the Better Business Bureau in regards to the non-profit organization of your choice.

Your best bet is to try to avoid brokers and look for individual organizations that accept donations.

The best two places to find car donation charities would be online or in the phone book. Give the organization as much information as possible about your vehicle as you can.

Just make sure that you pay close attention to the charity and you may want to ask around or even place the company in a search engine to make sure they are legit before yoiu offer your car.
